City Water Rate Increases Will Be Higher than Anticipated
On June 21, San Diego city water officials told City Council they must raise water rates more than previously announced—19.8% instead of 17.6%. The updated proposal is scheduled to be heard at Council on September 19; officials didn’t provide estimates of the impact on average monthly bills for business customers. They said rate increases are needed to pay for upgrades to customer service, maintenance of more than 3,300 miles of aging pipes, and capital projects like ongoing construction of the city’s Pure Water sewage recycling system.
Homeless Encampment Ban Narrowly Passes
The San Diego City Council recently voted 5-4 in favor of banning homeless encampments on public property when shelter is available. Camping will be barred at all times within two blocks of shelters and schools, in parks and open spaces, along waterways, and at transit hubs. The proposal had the support of Mayor Gloria, while opponents say criminalizing homelessness will push people into other regions away from services.
San Diego County Chief Medical Officer Named Interim HHSA Director
County Chief Medical Officer Dr. Eric McDonald was named interim Health and Human Services Agency director by CAO Helen Robbins-Meyer, replacing the outgoing Nick Macchione. Dr. McDonald has worked at the county since 2015 and played an instrumental role in the county’s COVID-19 response. He is expected to hold the position into 2024 as the county looks for a permanent replacement.

Biocom California invites you to join us on July 20 for an informative presentation on the National Cancer Institute’s SBIR program—an engine of innovation for developing and commercializing novel technologies and products to prevent, diagnose, and treat cancer. NCI SBIR Director Michael Weingarten will discuss funding opportunities, application best practices, commercialization resources, and more. The Illumina Genomic Discoveries Lab-in-a-Box Program
The Illumina Genomic Discoveries Lab-in-a-Box program, which provides educators and students with curriculum, equipment and resources to complete a hands-on DNA sequencing experiment, served 670 students this year in San Diego. Additionally, 34 educators across California and beyond were trained on the Illumina Genomic Discoveries (IGD) Virtual Experience program. These educators were able to bring the IGD Virtual Experience curriculum and resources to more than 425 students throughout California and the world. Biocom California Institute is seeking mentors for the Life Science Young Leaders, Veterans in Life Sciences, and NOVAWorks Fellowship programs. By becoming a mentor, you’ll have the opportunity to help one of our program participants take the next step in their career. Mentors will guide their Fellow through the life science sector, introducing them to the wide range of career opportunities available in the industry, and helping them capitalize on their unique and valuable skillset.
