Environment & Sustainability

Thermo Fisher Scientific is setting new standards for the life science industry by announcing it will power all their current U.S. sites with 100 percent renewable electricity by 2026. Facilitated by EDF Renewables, Thermo Fisher Scientific will receive approximately 545,000 MWh of renewable electricity annually from the Millers Branch Solar project in Texas to supplement their pre-existing agreement with Enel North America and the Seven Cowboy wind project. The impact of this transition contributes significantly to Thermo Fisher’s recently announced commitment to raise its 2030 reduction target for greenhouse gas emissions—from 30 percent to 50 percent, based on a 2018 baseline. The company has submitted its climate targets to the Science Based Targets initiative for validation; one of the first companies in its sector to submit net-zero goals. 

Veolia, the world’s leading provider of environmental solutions, is championing the potential for municipal wastewater plants to serve as a launchpad for increased sustainability. With more local governments than ever accelerating their efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, wastewater plants may be the most practical place for cities to implement high-impact initiatives to reduce both costs and emissions. Some potential solutions include generating power on-site using anaerobic digesters that utilize bacteria for breaking down organic matter in wastewater, implementing renewable energy resources on-site through self-sufficient microgrids, and more. With government incentives rolling out for updating wastewater treatment solutions, making the switch has the potential to be an approachable first step for many. Read more about Veolia’s efforts.

Biocom California and the Industrial Environmental Association will host a Sustainability and Circularity in Laboratory Plastics workshop at The Alexandria in Torrey Pines. Experts from My Green Lab and Polycarbin Lab Recycling will present the state of laboratory plastics recycling and the current resources available.
