City of San Diego Hires Private Workers to Help with Permit Backlog
City workers are severely behind in processing building permits, with over 3,000 applications in their possession at any time. Mayor Todd Gloria, with the employee union’s support, hopes new temporary workers can help the city reduce the delays holding back projects during a housing crisis.
Board of Supervisor’s Chair Nora Vargas Delivers State of the County Address
This year’s State of the County Address focused on improving life for families, improving infrastructure and mental health care, and combating homelessness across San Diego County. Chair Vargas also discussed strengthening public safety, reducing food insecurity, and fighting for environmental justice and eco-friendly job creation.
Land Development Code 2022 Code Update
The San Diego City Council heard the Land Development Code’s 2022 Code Update on February 14. The package includes streamlining new regulatory requirements, providing additional incentives to increase the supply of housing, and a proposal to add more developable acreage in transit-oriented areas in their local housing programs. Biocom California is supportive of this proposal known as Sustainable Development Areas (SDAs).

Apply Now: Asahi Kasei Pharma Open Innovation Program
Asahi Kasei Pharma is seeking researchers at universities, institutes, and enterprises outside of Japan to create innovative new drugs for its Open Innovation Program 2023. The company offers collaborative research opportunities with funding and scientific contribution, including drug discovery support, as well as continued collaboration up to technology transfer. Researchers specializing in new drug target molecules, drug candidates, therapeutic concepts and technologies in a variety of fields are encouraged to apply: autoimmune; renal; bone; neurodegenerative diseases and pain; and drug discovery platform technologies. Research expenses can range from $50,000 to $200,000 per year, for research periods of one to three years. Applications close on February 27, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. PST. Life Science Young Leaders and Military Fellowships
Biocom California Institute kicked off the Life Science Young Leaders and Military Fellowships with a virtual career panel with guest speakers from Illumina, Mirati Therapeutics, and Poseida Therapeutics. Biocom California Institute is excited to work with 17 Life Science Young Leaders and 10 Military Fellows over the next five months to provide them with an overview of the life science industry and the career opportunities within it.
