The Leaders of the Salk, Sanford-Burnham and Scripps: A View from the Top

The Salk Institute, Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute and The Scripps Research Institute are unquestionably three of the premier research centers in the world---all located within a half-mile radius of the first hole at Torrey Pines South. This concentration of high-powered research has played a seminal role in the growth and vigor of the San Diego biotech community and subsequent attraction for the many pharmaceutical companies that have established laboratories in close proximity (i.e. JNJ, LLY, NVS, PFE, TAK). A large number of the San Diego's biotech companies were founded by scientists from these institutes and the senior management teams of many local biotech companies are dominated by scientists trained at these institutes.

We are all familiar the elite scientists but how many of us really know the leaders of these institutes? What does the future of research look like? What keeps them up at night? For the first time, the leaders of the Salk (William Brody/President), Sanford-Burnham (John Reed/CEO) and Scripps (Michael Marletta/President) will sit together to discuss a wide range of topics relevant to the biotech community (spin-outs, collaborations, incubators, expansion/contraction, funding and 'the future'). The discussion will be moderated by Jim Schaeffer (Merck Research Labs) and there will be an opportunity to accept questions from the audience.

Jim Schaeffer, Executive Director of Licensing & External Research, Merck Research Labs

William Brody, President, The Salk Institute
Michael Marletta, President, The Scripps Research Institute
John Reed, CEO, Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute
